What's so sad and disillusioning
about encouraging school spirit?
What's wrong with admitting you
have any? It’s not sophisticated.
And we all want to be sophisticated,
don't we? Besides, if we weren't
blase and cynical then the enrolled
masses and the News would have to
find something else to talk and
grumble about.
Oh yes, it's true, State has a
crackerbox gym, some very poor
teachers, no campus, a quantity of
chubby girls and effiminate boys and
only four fraternities, If it is at all
possible, Ict's be realistic for a mo-
ment. It's hard here, but try. Ever
campus has defects, so wh,
these excuses? Why use any
at all for cynicism? And what’
acceptible about encouraging
pseudo-sophistication and apathy?
Did you know that one out of four
students at State has a Regents
Scholarship? That students are ac-
cepted partly on the basis of a min-
imum LQ, that most of the facts
that the administration throws out
about “cream of the crop", ete., is
true, even if it is propagenda?
If you're honest you really don't
have much of an excuse for being
ashamed of State when you come
right down to it. So why be asham-
ed? Why by cynical?
When the Class of '62 arrived we
got the old treatment of polite tol-
erance for enthusiasm, and we
quickly learned that to belong you

had to frequent the local taverns,
be casual about classes, bad marks,
and above all, be APATHETIC. So
we were. But it was a mistake, as a
few brave individuals will admit in
private.
Speaking optimistically and un-
sophisticatedly, it's not too late to
get out of the rut, And why not
take the still-enthusiastic freshmen
with us! They've got lots of pep
and go and it could spread if it
was encouraged.
Let's more emphasis on the
wide variety of activities offered
here besides the ones conducted in

Number Please...
Do we still have a service on this campus known as
a State College Directory? If sc, will we have the publica-
tion out in time to address valentines? Call out Fowler,
we need an investigation!
In the past lists were posted with names, addresses,
and phone numbers in order that students might make
the necessary corrections. These lists were up for about
three weeks. So far, no lists!
Every year, same problem—no cover design. This holds
up publication another month. So far no problem!
Taking the above into account plus the length of time
necessary to publish a work of that nature, just when will
the Directory be released to the students?
By the way, congratulations to the new editor. Who
is it this week?
Yea! Rah! Cha! Cha!...
Are you tired of hearing the strains of “Buckle Down
Oh State” and “Fight Team Fight”? Well so are we, that’s
why we're doing something about it. It's about time, we
think, for revisions,
M.T.
The State College News is sponsoring a contest. (Gung
Ho!, aren’t we?) We're looking for new cheers and songs
that are really lively and different. Let's get away from
the same old trite cheers that sound as though they could
used in a dragged out, monotonous, corrective speech
class.

To the editor:
For personal reasons, I would like

from a basic disagreement with the

At Bleecker
By JOHN MODDER
Congratulations to the students of STATE, For the
first time in many a soccer game we had more fans than
pigeons at Bleceker!
I was also told by a cheerleader to compliment you
Is was the first time she had some response from you, You
really had her worried; she was beginning to think that
you were non-existent, but you restored her faith in you
, Maybe I have a lot to learn about human idiosyn-
crasies but f just can’t understand you students at STATE
Here we have a great soceer team, a team that goes out
for every game and fights with all its heart to win for you
and you just. sit there like bumps on a log Whats wrong?
Do you lose your voices when you get to Bleecker? Heaven
knows you're loud enough around campus!
If vou have read this article this far you hay

» RALLY ON VEE FIELD
A Pep Rally will be run by the chee readers this Friday

‘Senate-Go-Round’ Includes Discussion
Of SUB Activities, Camp Board Committee
Report, Talk, Table
At this weeks meeting, Senate
discussed many, many, many topics,
reversed its attitude on one of them,
and came to some conclusions on a
few.
Accomplishments
The first thine done by Senate
was to swear in the newly elected
senators, As usual, not all of the
senators were present at this session.
A request from Student Union
Board was then announced, asking
for $100 to be used to hire a band
for a cance on October 24, Senate
discussed the advantages of holding
dances on weekends when nothing
else is scheduled,
Members of SUB pointed out that
a total of almost 600 people attended
the last two such dances, and that
since they were so successful, they
should be continued.
It was pointed out that SUB asked
for a floating fund to provide for
such dances a couple of weeks ago
and that, at that time, Senate re-
fused to allocate funds, If Senate
decided to give SUB this money it
would be reversing its former de-
cision.
After more discussion the motion
was put to a yote and passed, Thi
of course, meant that Senate had
contradicted a former decision.
Camp Board
A committee was set up to meet
with Camp Board to discuss future
legislation concerning State's camp
at Dippikill
‘The first topic reported on the
request by the Business Depurtment
that Student Association buy its own
Guplicating machine, A decision was
postponed until the matter could be
further investigated

ced as officers of Sayles Hall for the

A report was then given concern-
ing the proposed payment by Stu-
dent Association of all or part of
the costs of sending representatives
to the Eastern States Science Con-
ference, After quite a bit of discus-
sion it was pointed out that Senate
should not commit itself until more
information is available,
Another report was given concern-
ing the proposal that State join the
National Student Association, The
merits of this organization were
pointed out and Senate decided to
contact other colleges which belong
to this organization and to postpone
further action to a later date,
News Request
Tt was then announced that Mon-
ic Trashus, Editor-in-Chief of the
State College News, requests that
Senate Meetings be held Tuesday
evenings instead of Wednesday in
order to facilitate better and more
convenient coverage. This writer
(and I'm sure the whole News Board
