STATE COLLEGE NEWS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1961

Parents’ Day—Parents Treat?

Tomorrow one thousand parents will be at State, pre-
sumably to participate in the Parents’ Day events. The
question we would like to raise is, “Will they attend these
events?”

The Parents’ Day Committee has worked for many
weeks planning activities which will be both interesting
and enjoyable to your parents. Many of the parents of
freshmen will have the opportunity to view campus life for
the first time. Will they be here to spend the day meeting
your friends and faculty?

There has been a noticable trend in past years to cele-
brate Parent’s Day by having parents treat their offspring
to a gala day on the town. This should not be the case.
The purpose of Parent’s Day is to acquaint your parents
with your campus. Many opportunities have been provid-
ed to give an accurate picture of State College living. This
is one of the few times of the year when all dormitories will
be open to the public. Your parents will be able to mect
your classroom instructors at tomorrow's coffee hour in
Brubacher. Guides will be available to show your family
the academic campus. The President of the College and
the President of Student Association will speak. The States-
men will offer a musical program. The dormitory directors
will meet your parents at a free lunch. Free parking has
been arranged for, and will be carried out in a systematic
way. for the first time at Parent's Day.

These events are all worthwhile efforts, but unless an
adequate number of people support them, they will not
fulfill their purpose. Time and effort have been spent to
make the day a pleasant one. Let's make this a year when
all of our parents will enjoy everything

AED,

Qualified ... and Quality!

We are very grateful for the outstanding slate of
speakers which has been presented this year. Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt's speech was extremely interesting and pertinent
in this time of world ¢ Students appreciate such per-
sonal contact with eminent persons whom we usually mect
through the impersonal media of newspapers, radio, and
television

On the local political scene, Mr. Robert Hudnut gave
us an enlightening talk. Because we live in Albany for at
least four years of our lives, it is important that we be aware
of and try to alleviate those conditions whieh we find un-
favorable

Although Dr. Hardin Craig was invited here particu-
larly for the benefit of the faculty, many students were
fortunate in meeting him and hearing him speak. For us
who are on the threshold of our teaching careers, it was
inspiring to have the opportunity of mecting this venerable
and distinguished scholar. We are certain that he contrib-
uted a great deal to the English Department of Graduate
Studies.

Dr. Henry Hatfield, Professor of Germanic Literature
at Harvard, was sponsored by the Department of Compar-
ative Literature. Many of us have read some of the works
of Thomas Mann, and Dr. Hatfield's interpretations gave
us a new insight into the literature of this great modern

In order to receive a truly liberal education, we need
to do much more than indiscriminately devour the aca-
demic diet which is offered to us. These renowned lectur-
ers have added immeasurably to our intellectual awareness
