Onee in « while a letter comes to my desk in which the
writer asks how he can get a piece of glass coated with a non-
reflecting coating and what the price will be. The last of
these was from a man who wented a lot of bottles coated at a
cost not to exceed 5f apiece!
In the past, I have referred many of these writers to you
and to the Gussack Machines Products Company, Long Island City,
New York. It occurs to me thet it would be well for me to write
to ask you if you are still coating glass for customers, I have
tried to sift out the writers and refer to you only those whose
problems sounded to me as if they were sensible. Will you let
me know your wish in this matter? Do you care to teil me any
approximate price range for coatings, which I could quote then
I answer the letters? That might serve to sift the writers still
more. 7

Your letter of January 16 concerning reflection
reduction coatings has been referred to me since I ordinarily
handle matters concerned with our interests in these develop-
ments. .
Our current policy with regard to our reflection
reduction coatings is that we do not offer the service of
applying the coatings, but we are interested in Licensing
our developments to manufacturers who desire to coat their
own products or to companies who wili act in a job coating
capacity and will apply the coatings to articles manufactured
by others. Actually, our License extends both privileges
to the licensee, but, so far, it has turned out that the
interested people have the intention of performing one or
the other of the functions and do not plan to coat their
own products and aiso do job coating.
We are glad to do sample coating here in South-
bridge when our equipment is equal to the request, but we
have not done any jobs of a production nature for some time.
As you probably know, the Pittsburgh Plate Glass
Company formerly applied our coatings by the dipping method
and were able to handie fairly large areas. However, when
military uses of the coatings fell off, they did not feel
that it was economically feasible to maintain their exten-
sive production facilities and therefore they can no longer
serve users of the coatings.
Within the past few weeks, Mr. Richard D. Brew, of
9 Euclid Circle, Natick, Massachusetts, has instailed equip-
ment for applying our coatings by both the dipping end the
spinning methods and is equipped to fill a variety of coating
needs. Hr. Brew has a small precision optical shop and,
besides applying our coatings, ha@® vacuum equipment for
custom work on both high and low reflection evaporated coatings.
I am sure that any work referred to Mr. Brew wili receive

The American Optical Company has developed a method of coating
large panes, but it requires a speciel technical procedure which
is not simple. The difficulty in making a successful coating
lies in the fact that it must have a uniform thickness of four
millionths of an inch. This is usually accomplished either by
evaporating the coating material in vacuum, or by depositing
it from solution in a solvent that evaporates rapidly as the
@less is raised from the solution at a controlled rate.
