Abstract:
This collection documents the career of Allen B. Ballard as Professor of Government at City College of New York (CUNY), and Professor of History and Africana Studies at the University at Albany, SUNY. During his time at CUNY, Ballard also served as Dean of the Faculty where he developed the SEEK program than later influenced both CUNY and SUNY equal opportunity programs.

Scope and Content:

This collection documents the career of Allen B. Ballard and includes records from the development of CUNY and SUNY equal opportunity programs, unpublished manuscripts of fiction and nonfiction, correspondence and other faculty papers.

Biographical / Historical:

Allen B. Ballard is a Professor of History and Africana Studies at the University at Albany, SUNY. Ballard was one of the first African American students at Kenyon College and was on their football team, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and one of the first black Sovietologists. Ballard went on to earn his PhD. in government from Harvard.

Prior to working at the University at Albany, Ballard was a Professor of Government at City College of New York (CUNY). During his time at CUNY, Ballard also served as Dean of the Faculty where he developed the SEEK program than later influenced both CUNY and SUNY equal opportunity programs.

Ballard is the author of many books and gospel songs. Among his notable writings include Carried by Six and Where I'm Bound. His books have recieved many awards including The Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Ballard still teaches at the University at Albany and is a Collins Fellow.

Acquisition information:
Allen B. Ballard donated materials to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives in 2010, 2015 and 2017.
