Dear Class of ’14 Graduates,
Families and Friends:

‘Today is a momentous occasion for our graduates. It represents
a culmination of the perseverance and commitment they
have demonstrated in mastering a course of study. It is also a
confirmation of the personal and intellectual growth they have
achieved as members of a vibrant campus community. The
faculty and staff of the University at Albany are tremendously

proud of them.

We know this pride is shared by their families and friends.
In the coming years, society will benefit from our graduates’
contributions to science, education, social work, health care,
business, public policy and numerous other fields. Our pride
will only grow as we learn of their future successes.

Throughout this journey, they have been surrounded by
faculty who possess a profound commitment to teaching, and
whose research and scholarship address today’s most important
issues. UAlbany graduates are accomplished, not only in
classroom study, but also because of research, internship, and
volunteer opportunities. At the University at Albany, our goal
is to put “The World Within Reach.” Today, we stand before
students whose worldviews have been enriched during their
time on our culturally and intellectually diverse campus.

The Class of ’14 joins the ranks of the University’s more than
160,000 alumni who are having an impact close to home and

around the globe.

We hope as they leave our campus and for years to come, they
will carry fond memories of their UAlbany experience and
remember this commencement celebration as one of their

warmest and most joyful occasions.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

THE UNDERGRADUATE CEREMONY

Hamdi Ulukaya, Founder & CEO, Chobani

amdi Ulukaya founded Chobani in upstate
H=: York in 2005 and launched Chobani

Greek Yogurt in 2007. Less than six years
later, it has become the No.1-selling Greek Yogurt
brand in the U.S. with more than a billion dollars
in annual sales - making Chobani one of the fastest-
growing companies in history. Led by his passion to
democratize better food for
more people, Hamdi’s vision
for Chobani has effectively
transformed an entire food
category. For his impact,
Hamdi was named _ the
2013 Ernst & Young World
Entrepreneur of the Year.

Hamdi’s success is rooted
in humble beginnings. A
Kurdish immigrant, Hamdi
grew up in eastern Turkey,
helping with his family’s dairy
business. In 1994, he moved
to the U.S. to learn English
and study business. While a
student, Hamdi was struck
by the difference in quality
between American
product offerings and the

dairy

dairy foods he had grown up eating, and thus decided
to start a small cheese company. It was during this time
that Hamdi came across a flier for a recently closed
Kraft plant. Though he initially threw the ad away,
instinct led him to retrieve the ad and with the help
of a Small Business Administration loan, he purchased
the plant and officially started Chobani in 2005.

Hamdi spent 18 months perfecting his yogurt recipe,
and Chobani hit shelves in 2007. Despite strong
interest from specialty stores, Hamdi remained
committed to making his product — a simple cup of
good yogurt — accessible to all. His belief was that
everyone deserves access to quality yogurt. In 2009,

Hamdi’s conviction paid off: New England’s largest
retailer agreed to shelve Chobani. Six years later,
Chobani has become the No. 1-selling yogurt brand
in America. Chobani has also built the largest yogurt
factory in the world in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Beyond his business acumen, Hamdi is also a
passionate philanthropist. The word “Chobani”
means shepherd in Turkish, and
Hamdi has embraced the spirit
of the shepherd since Chobani’s
earliest days. He has pledged to
give 10% of profits to charity,
and the Chobani Foundation has
distributed grants to grassroots
organizations all over the world.
From helping to build a state-
of-the-art little league stadium
for the youth of New Berlin, to
making a gift of a million dollars to
support famine relief in Somalia,
Hamdi has been dedicated to
empowering _ individuals _to
reach their full potential. He is
committed to making good food
accessible to more people, and to
strengthening U.S. manufacturing
in small towns across the country.

Hamdi was recently appointed to the Presidential
Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship (PAGE)
along with a group of successful business leaders who
have committed to sharing their time, energy, ideas
and experiences to help develop the next generation
of entrepreneurs.

Hamdihad the honor of delivering the Commencement
Address at The Culinary Institute of America in 2013.
He resides in New Berlin, NY, with his two German
Shepherds.

ACADEMIC HERALDRY

he caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college

and university functions date back to the
Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days
wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty
12th-century castles and halls of learning. The gowns
for the bachelor’s degree, earned after undergraduate
study, have long, pointed sleeves and are designed
to be worn closed.

back. The hood is bordered with velvet of the proper
width to indicate the degree and of the color signifying
the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of
the highest degree are worn. Holders of several doctoral
degrees may make a choice of hood for any particular
occasion. The colors indicative of the various fields of
learning are as follows:

The holder of the master’s degree wears a gown
with an oblong sleeve open at the wrist. The sleeve
base hangs down, and the rear part of its oblong
shape is worn square cut. The gown may be worn
open or closed. An alternate and older master’s
gown is also permissible. The gown is always worn
open, has a long sleeve, which is square and closed
at the end, and has a slit near the forearm.

Arts, Letters, Humanities: White
Accountancy, Business, Commerce: Dusk
Economics: Copper

Education: Powder Blue

Fine Arts: Brown

Journalism: Crimson

Library Science: Lemon Yellow

Music: Pink

Gowns for the doctoral degree may also be worn
open or closed, but they carry broad velvet panels
down the front and three velvet bars on the full,
round, open sleeves. The velvet trimming may be
either in black or the color distinctive to the field
of learning to which the degree pertains.

Academic gowns for each level are black, although a few
institutions permit doctoral recipients to wear gowns of
the characteristic institutional color.

Philosophy: Royal Blue

Public Administration, including Foreign Service:
Teal Blue

Public Health: Salmon Pink

Science: Golden Yellow

Social Science and Social Work: Citron

Graduating students at UAlbany wear tassels of the color
representing their field of study. Honors graduates of

the baccalaureate program also wear honor medallions.

Academic protocol allows trustees, presidents, and
marshals of higher education institutions to wear
gowns which are especially designed and colored. The
president of the University at Albany wears a black and
royal purple gown bearing four horizontal royal purple
bars with gold braiding on the sleeves. The marshals’
gowns at UAlbany are navy blue with gold accents.

Candidates for degrees are listed as of April 13, 2014.
No changes in status could be made after this date.
Honors for May degree candidates were computed
using the cumulative grade point average as of
this date and a projection that the student will have
earned 56 or more credits at UAlbany, of which a
minimum of 40 credits are A-E graded. Official honor
status will be recalculated when spring term grades are
recorded and will appear on the diploma.

Caps may be of serge, broadcloth, or, for the doctoral

outfit only, of velvet. The tassel is black or the color
appropriate to subject, except the doctoral cap may have
a tassel of gold or bullion.

It is the hood that gives color and real meaning to the
academic costume. The hoods of the master’s degree
recipients are a black shell made of material to match
the gown and use the institutional colors. UAlbany’s
institutional colors are royal purple and gold. The
doctoral hood, which uses the same institutional colors,
is larger and of a different style, having a flat panel at the

MINERVA

Sn the University at Albany’s beginnings as the New York State Normal College, Minerva, the Roman
goddess of wisdom, has been the institution’s enduring symbol.

The figure of Minerva and the Latin motto, Sapientia et sua et docendi causa (“Wisdom, both for its own sake and for
the sake of teaching”) have appeared on the University seal since

z about 1913. Today, Minerva, wearing her distinctive helmet,

¢ UAlbany’s seven-foot-plus white plaster statue of Minerva

was purchased in 1888.

e While there is no official record of where she came from,
remembrances have it that the statue was purchased with
funds from a $1 student fee collected for make-up exams.

¢ The Minerva statue was originally located at 88 Willett
St. in Albany when the University was the New York State
Normal College. In 1906, when a devastating fire broke
out in the college’s administrative offices, a brave
custodian, Charles Wurtham, rescued the statue
from the burning building.

¢ Minerva assumed her new home in the rotunda of
Draper Hall when UAlbany was the State College for
‘Teachers. For more than six decades, she was a
popular meeting place for students. “Meetcha at
Minnie” was a favorite phrase and her photograph
appeared frequently in UAlbany yearbooks.

By 1962, the College had earned national distinction. In that same year, the State University of New York system
of higher education underwent a rapid expansion in response to rising needs. The College joined the system

as one of four University Centers, and became a broad-based public research institution. Evan R. Collins,
president from 1949 to 1969, led this transformation, complete with a new campus uptown.

Modern architect Edward Durrell Stone designed the uptown campus on what was once
the Albany Country Club. Purportedly the largest single academic construction ever
ndertaken, it was estimated that the project used over 270,000 cubic yards of concrete
1d fifty miles of copper tubing. It was rumored that if the 500 architectural drawings were
put end to end they would reach for a half mile. Albany Mayor Erastus Corning II and

CONGRATULATIONS

Dear Graduate,

Congratulations on your graduation and welcome to the UAlbany Alumni
Association. After a significant investment of time and effort, your admirable
hard work has paid off — you are now an alumnus of the University at Albany!
As I salute and welcome you to the ranks of our alumni, it is appropriate that I
address my remarks to your future association with UAlbany.

Being a UAlbany alum comes with many benefits. I urge you to tap into
the power of the more than 160,000-strong alumni network for career
opportunities or to stay connected with friends and classmates.

As a GOLD (Graduate of the Last Decade) alum, you'll also be receiving
invitations to special events designed especially for you, like the GOLD
Comedy Night last summer, the GOLD Schmooze in New York City
each fall and the annual GOLD reunion at Homecoming each October.
Find out more about being a GOLD alum by visiting our Web page at
www.albany.edu/alumni/GOLD.php.

There are lots of ways to stay in touch and make sure you get the latest news:
Connect with fellow alums through the alumni Facebook group, do some
professional networking through LinkedIn, or learn about UAlbany news and
GOLD events through our GOLD Twitter group. You can also stay connected
through UAlbany’s free alumni online community, which includes an alumni
directory, UCAN online networking database, permanent email and much more.

Whenever you are on campus, stop by the Alumni House to say hello and take
advantage of our Alumni Concierge Program, which offers computer access,
free parking and more to visiting alumni. We hope you'll consider the Alumni
House your new home away from home! We are available to help you get
connected. Help us help you.

With warm regards and best wishes for success,

Lois P-Huphy

ALMA MATER

College of the Empire State
Mother of an army great,
Thou the molder of our fate,
Thee we sing today.

Thine the hand we clasp so strong,
Holding tho’ the years be long,
Thou the burden of our song,
Thee we sing today.

Ways of pleasantness are thine,
Leading where in wisdom’s shrine,
Joy and cheer, and hope divine,
Ever dwell for aye.

Thine the voice whose call we hear,
Thine the hand which holds us near,
Thine the heart, so true, so dear,
Cherished, loved alway.

Wisdom’s duty heeds thy call,
Ever in Minerva’s thrall,

Pass the torch from one to all,

Guide each destiny.
Neath the Purple and the Gold,
Let thy history unfold,
Sons and daughters, young and old,
Hail to Albany.
