Caps and Gowns

Dear Graduating Students:

We at the University are pleased to
invite you and your family and friends to
the 1984 Commencement exercises to be
held on Sunday, May 20 on the main
athletic field. Degrees will be conferred
upon approximately 3,500 students who
have successfully completed courses of
study leading to a variety of
undergraduate and graduate degrees.

This traditional ceremony represents
one acknowledgment of academic
achievement. It is an important day for
all concerned, and we look forward with
you to its full enjoyment. On behalf of
the faculty and administration of the
University, I congratulate you and extend
our good wishes.

All spring 1984 degree candidates and
summer and fall 1983 degree recipients
are encouraged to attend Commencement
functions on Sunday, May 20. August
1984 undergraduate degree candidates are
welcome to attend the ceremonies and
should notify the Office of the Registrar
(AD B35) of their intention to attend. It is
not necessary for the other degree
candidates to make this contact.

Important Dates

April 15

Last date to rent master’s and doctoral
caps and gowns through the University
Bookstore.

Doctoral recipients for summer and fall
1983 and doctoral candidates for spring
1984 must notify Richard Farrell,
Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies,
Administration Building 112, that they
plan to attend Commencement.

May 9
Last date to make dormitory room
reservations for Commencement guests.

May 19
Last date to purchase baccalaureate caps
and gowns.

May 20

Commencement procession formation at
12:30 p.m. Up-to-date information
and/or changes concerning the formation
of the procession will be available at the
Campus Center Information Desk,
518-457-3300 or 518-457-4912. The
graduation ceremony will begin at 1:00
p.m. on the football field (rain or shine).
A limited number of seats will be
available in the gym for parents and
guests who would prefer to watch

the ceremonies on closed-circuit
television rather than sit outdoors in
inclement weather.

Bachelor’s Regalia may be purchased
at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in
the Campus Center between May 9 and
May 20, 1984.

Master’s and Doctoral Regalia
(rented) may be ordered at the Bookstore
beginning March 1, 1984. The deadline
is April 15, 1984.

Master’s and doctoral regalia will be
distributed May 15-May 19, 1984 at the
Bookstore. All rented regalia must be
returned to the Bookstore immediately
after the ceremony. The Bookstore will
be open until 4:00 p.m.

August and December 1983 graduates
may make reservations for regalia by
mail. Contact the Bookstore within the
above dates.

Degree Clearance

Degree Candidates, Spring 1984

The academic records of all students who
have applied for spring graduation are
currently being reviewed. Candidates
whose degree programs do not currently
meet catalog requirements will be
notified before the end of the spring
term. Candidates who have failed to
complete all academic requirements by
May 20, 1984 or who have outstanding
financial obligations will be notified
following the close of the final

grading period.

Final clearance is issued pending the
satisfactory completion of the final term
of study or the fulfillment of all academic
requirements, or both. Candidates who
fulfill all requirements for the degree
may expect to receive their diplomas and
final transcripts through the mail in
late June.

Weekend Schedule

Commencement information may
be obtained at the Campus Center
Information Desk, from Commencement
ushers, or by telephoning 518-457-8390.

Graduates and guests are encouraged to
arrive early for Commencement to avoid
traffic and parking congestion. They will
be directed to parking areas.

Dinner will be available in each
uptown quadrangle dining hall on
Saturday evening, May 19, from
5:00 p.m, to 6:00 p.m. Brunch on
Sunday will be served in each quadrangle
dining hall from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
The Campus Center snack bar will be
open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Receptions are being scheduled on
May 20 by many of the schools,

colleges, and divisions. Graduates and
their families and friends will be able to
meet with members of the faculty, enjoy
refreshments, and bid farewell to
classmates. As each reception is
scheduled, the school or college will
inform students and faculty directly.

for commencement guests with
advance reservations.

9:00 p.m.

Torch Night ceremony on the football
field (north of the Physical Education
Building). Seniors will pass their torches
to underclass students. They will be
joined by the president of

the University and the president

of the Alumni Association for this
traditional event.

Sunday, May 20

10:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

The Art Gallery will be open to guests
and will feature thesis exhibitions by 20
candidates for the M.F.A. degree in
studio art. The Art Gallery will also be
open on Saturday, May 19 from

1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

12:30 p.m.

Degree candidates and faculty assemble
in caps and gowns at designated areas
in and around the Physical

Education Building.

1:00 p.m.
Academic procession begins.

1:30 p.m.
Commencement (on the football field
located just north of the Physical
Education Building). Parents and
guests will be seated on a first-come,
first-served basis. Tickets will not be
required. There will be a first-aid station
at the Commencement site. The
ceremonies will be held outdoors, rain or
shine, Guests may wish to bring
umbrellas in case of inclement weather.
If they choose, guests may be seated in
the gym and view the ceremonies on a
closed-circuit television. There is limited
seating in the gym.

In the event of rain the conferring
of the doctoral degrees will be held
in the Preforming Arts Center at
approximately 2:30 p.m.

Doctorates (D.A., D.P.A., Ed. D.,

Ph.D.): Report to men’s locker room in
Physical Education Building.

Master’s (M.A., M.S., M.B.A.,
M.L.S., M.P.A., M.S.W.) and
Certificate of Advanced Study:
Assemble near double gate behind
speaker’s platform at north end of track.

Bachelor’s (B.A.): Assemble on service
road between Indian Quad and Physical
Education Building.

Bachelor’s (B.S.): (other than the School
of Business) Assemble on service road
between Dutch Quad and Physical
Education Building.

Bachelor’s (B.S.): from the School of
Business assemble behind master’s
candidates near the double gate behind
the speaker’s platform at the north end
of the track.

Faculty Members: Report to lobby of
Physical Education Building.

Reporting Time: Not later than

12:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 20 for
all participants.

Educational
Certification

Those seeking New York state
certification as teachers, school
librarians, school guidance counselors, or
school administrators through completion
of registered programs should contact
Susan Shafarzek, Office of Graduate
Admissions and Student Development,
AD 112, (518-457-8585) for instructions
and application materials. Those
completing other than registered
programs apply directly to the State of
New York: Bureau of Teacher
Certification, Empire State Plaza,
Albany, NY 12230.
Guest Reservations

Each year many parents and friends of

graduating students are housed

in University residence halls

during Commencement Weekend.

Accommodations will be available this

year on the uptown campus.

1. Overnight accommodations are
available only for the night of
Saturday, May 19.

2. Cost: $17 per person for a double
room (two persons sharing a room)
or $22 per person for a single room.

3. Rooms may be reserved by sending
full payment for the number of beds
desired in either single or double
occupancy. Checks should be made
payable to “‘SUNY Albany.’’ These
reservations are nonrefundable
after May 13. Reservations or
cancellations may be made by mail
to: Commencement Housing, Office
of Residential Life, State University
of New York at Albany, 1400
Washington Avenue, Albany, New
York 12222. Telephone reservations
will not be accepted.

4. Reservations are on a first-come,
first-served basis. We must receive
your reservations by May 9.

5. Information needed for making

6. Guests should register immediately
upon arrival. Specific check-in
locations will be given at the time of
reservation. The check-in desk will
be open 1:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on
Saturday, May 19.

7. The University will provide linen,
pillows, blankets, towels, soap, cups,
and ashtrays. There will be no room
telephone service. Accommodations
for small children are not available.
Pets are not permitted in the
residence halls.

8. Guests must check out between
10 a.m. and 1 p.m. before the
Commencement ceremony on
Sunday, May 20.

Special Offer

Graduating students can become active
members of the Association at the special
first-year rate of $10.00. This low dues
rate has been established to aid recent
graduates who are continuing their
studies or just getting started in the job
market. The offer allows graduates who
join now to take advantage of the
Association’s many benefits and services
for a full 15 months, through August 31,
1985. There is, in addition, a Life
Membership program at $250.00 payable
over an 18-month period, a very viable
option for young alumni.

The Alumni Association sponsors
exciting activities and events on campus
and in cities throughout the state and
nation. Dinners, receptions, seminars,
and reunions are only a few of the
ongoing programs offered to alumni. The
Association provides low-cost insurance
options, travel opportunities, and
continuing education services. Plus,
active members can continue to enjoy use
of campus facilities — library, physical
education, films, theatre, bowling. We
keep alumni in touch with each other
as well as with the University through
up-to-date records on 40,000 graduates,
The Carillon, the highly acclaimed
alumni newspaper, the Alumni Directory,
and class correspondence and newsletters.

To help graduating students maintain a
link with the University and with fellow
classmates, the Alumni Association is
