ceremony, and proofs (available for
purchase) will be emailed and/or mailed to
the graduates’ address on file at UAlbany.
Graduates and guests are welcome to take
photos and video during the ceremonies
from their seats but are prohibited from
taking photos in the aisles or blocking the
sight lines of other guests for long periods
of time. The graduate seating and stage
areas are off-limits to audience members.
UAlbany will also have professional staff
taking photos and video throughout the
entire weekend,

Concession areas will feature

basic food and beverages available
for purchase (cash or credit card),
Additionally, the Campus Center will have
limited establishments open with items
available for purchase. Complimentary
water will be available at every ceremony;
look for the large water containers
throughout the entry and/or seating areas.
Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited.

Balloons are not permitted in
any indoor venue due to their

fire systems, and noisemakers are not
permitted at any ceremony. Should any
of these be seen or heard, they will be
removed at the request of event staff
and/or University officials.

Restrooms are available in the lobby

and on the arena floor of the SEFCU
Arena, and throughout the walking paths
leading to the Entry Plaza

DIPLOMAS

Diplomas are not distributed at any
ceremony. Rather, they are mailed to
the student's permanent or degree address
as designated. Diplomas are ordered at the
conclusion of degree clearance (May 21,
2019), and it may take up to one month
to complete the posting of all degrees.
Delivery can take up to 4-8 weeks

DISABILITY SERVICES

UAlbany is committed to universal

access. ADA parking is available near
each ceremony venue for vehicles with
DMV-issued plates or permits. Accessible
shuttles are also available,

ACCESSIBLE SEATING

A reserved area for accessible seating
is available at all ceremonies. Due

to limited space and large volume of
guests, seating is available for the person
who needs the accessible seating and 1-2
accompanying guests.

WHEELCHAIRS/ELEVATORS

A limited number of wheelchairs

are available in the SEFCU Arena to
assist only with guest transportation to
from cars and seating areas (not for use
through the duration of the ceremony)
Elevator access is available as well. At the
outdoor ceremony, due to the distance
between cars and the venue, golf carts will
be available to escort guests as necessary.

CAPTIONING AND ASL INTERPRETATION
American Sign Language (ASL)
interpreters are available in the
SEFCU Arena to your right as you face
the stage, and the Entry Plaza to your left
as you face the stage. Live captioning

is available as well at www.albany.edu/

will be on site and respond to all health

Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller approves
the State University of New York's
revised master plan, calling for the
establishment of comprehensive state

New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller
leads the groundbreaking for the
uptown campus. The institution

is renamed the State University of
New York at Albany and becomes a

The SUNY Board of Trustees votes

first new residential hall to open at the

‘The University’s first athletic
fieldhouse, the Recreation and
Convocation Center, opens.

1993

‘The University is named a Center for
Advanced Thin Film Technology by
New York for its work in the emerg
field of nanotechnology. UAlbany
becomes a worldwide leader in this
science, establishing a school and then
the College of Nanoscale Science and
Engineering. The college becomes a
separate SUNY institution in 2013.

KATHRYN V. MARINELLO ’78

athryn V. Marinello is chief executive
fficer of Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. and a
member of the company’s board of directors. She
joined Hertz in January 2017, bringing more than
35 years of automotive, consumer marketing,
business services, technology and executive
management experience to this role.

Prior to joining Hertz, Ms. Marinello served as a
Senior Advisor of Ares Management LLC since
2014. Previously, she was chairman, president and
chief executive officer of Stream Global Services,
Inc. from 2010 to 2014. Her background includes
experience in banking, business service, and
technology, serving as the chief executive officer
and president of Ceridian Corporation from
2006 to 2010.

Ms. Marinello held a wide variety of senior roles
in ten years at General Electric (GE), leading
global, multi-billion dollar financial and services
businesses. At GE, she served as the chief executive
officer and president of GE Fleet Services at GE
Commercial Finance from 2002 to 2006 and
GE Insurance Solutions from 1999 to 2002. Ms.
Marinello served as president and chief executive
officer of GE Financial Assurance Partnership
Marketing Group, a diverse organization that
includes GE’ affinity marketing business, Auto
& Home Insurance business, and Auto Warranty
Service business from 2000 to 2002. Prior to

this role, Ms.
served as president of GE

Marinello

Capital Consumer Financial
Services and as an executive
vice president of GE Card
Services, where she began
her GE career in 1997.

Prior to GE Capital, she was
president of the Electronic
Payments Group at First
Data Corporation,
provided electronic banking
and commerce, debit and

positions at US Bank, Chemical Bank, Citibank
and Barclays.

Ms. Marinello has been a member of the Board
of Directors of AB Volvo since April 2014. She
previously served as a director of General Motors
from 2009 to 2016, Nielsen Holdings PLC from
2014 to 2017, RealPage, Inc. from 2015 to 2017,
and MasterCard’s U.S. board from 1996 to 2002.

A proud UAlbany alumna from the class of 1978,
Ms. Marinello earned a bachelor’s degree in
psychology at UAlbany and an MBA in marketing
from Hofstra University.

Almost all graduation
ceremonies feature “Pomp
and Circumstance” as
part of the processional.
Named after a line from
Shakespeare's Othello, the
song was written in 1901
by Sir Edward Elgar. It was
played when Elgar received
an honorary degree from
Yale University in 1905.
Other schools quickly

picked up on the tune, which

eventually spread to nearly
every college and
university in the U.S.

The mace symbolizes the
authority invested in the
president by a school's
governing body. Carried by
the Grand Marshal, it is
used only at formal academic
occasions. A gift from the
Class of 1930, UAlbany's
mace is made of bronze and
walnut, with several symbols
incorporated into the design
and a base that reflects
the fluted columns of
the campus.

of office are worn by University
presidents on ceremonial
occasions as part of their
regalia. UAlbany’s presidential
medallion, designed by Kurt
J. Matzdorf Silversmith, Inc.
of New Paltz, New York, is
sterling silver and features the
University seal

The caps, gowns, and hoods
worn at college and university
functions date back to the
Middle Ages. Monks and
students of those days wore
them to keep warm in the
damp and drafty 12th-century
casties and halls of learning.

Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, is the
enduring symbol of the University at Albany. The
figure of Minerva has appeared on the University

seal since about 1913, along with the Latin motto
“Sapientia et sua et docendi causa," or “Wisdom,
both for its own sake and for the sake of teaching.”

The tradition of moving the tassel from one side of the cap to the other symbolizes the students’

transition from degree candidate to graduate. Prior to the ceremony, an undergraduate's tassel is
worn on the right; upon the conferral of degrees by the University president, it should be moved
to the left side. Graduating students at UAlbany wear tassels of the color representing their
field of study, and students earning their master's and doctoral degrees also have these colors
represented on their hood. The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows:
