ACADEMIC HERALDRY
‘The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college
and university functions date back to the
Middle Ages. Monks and students of those
days wore them to keep warm in the damp
and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of
learning, The gowns for the bachelor’s
degree, earned after undergraduate study,
have long, pointed sleeves and are designed
to be worn closed.
The holder of the master’s degree wears a
gown with an oblong sleeve open at the
wrist. The sleeve base hangs down, and the
rear part of its oblong shape is worn square
cut. The gown may be worn open or closed.
An alternate and older master’s gown is also
permissible. The gown is always worn open,
has a long sleeve, which is square and closed
at the end, and has a slit near the forearm.
Gowns for the doctoral degree may also

be worn open or closed, but they carry
broad velvet panels down the front and
three velvet bars on the fall, round, open
sleeves. The velvet trimming may be either
in black ot the color distinctive to the field
of learning to which the degree pertains.
‘Academic gowns for each level are black,
although a few institations permit doctoral
recipients to wear gowns of the characteristic
institutional color.
Academic protocol allows trustees, presi-
dents, and marshals of higher education
institutions to weer gowns which are
especially designed and colored. The pres-
ident of the University at Albany wears a
black and royal purple gown bearing four
horizontal royal purple and gold bars on the
sleeves. The marshals gowns at UAlbany are
gold and blue.
Caps may be of serge, broadcloth, ot, for
the doctoral outfit only, of velver. The tassel
is black or the color appropriate to subject,
except the doctoral cap may have a tassel of
gold or bullion.
It is the hood that gives color and real
meaning to the academic costume. The bach-
elor’s hood is sometimes worn upon comple-
tion of the course, even though the degree
has not yet actually been conferred. A black
shell of varying size for the three degrees, and
of material to match the gowns, is lined with
silk in the colors of the institution conferring
the degree. Albany's institutional colors are
royal purple and gold.
The hoods of the master’s degree recipi-
ents are a black shell made of material to
match the gown and use the institutional
colors. The doctoral hood, which uses the

same institutional colors, is larger and of a
different style, having a flat panel at the back.
The hood is bordered with velvet of the
proper width to indicate the degree and of
the color signifying the field of learning to
which the degree pertains.
If more than one degree is held, the gown
and hood of the highest degree are worn.
Holders of several doctoral degrees may make
a choice of hood for any particular occasion,

Candidates for degrees are listed as of
November 7, 2007.
No changes in status could be made after
this date. Honors for December degree
candidates were computed using the cumu-
lative grade point average as of November
7, 2007, and a projection that the student
will have earned 56 or more credits at
UAlbany, of which a minimum of 40
credits are A-E graded. Official honor
status will be recalculated when fall 2007
grades are recorded and will appear on the
diploma.

The Honorable Gerald D. Jennings, M.S.’76
The Medallion of the University is the highest
award for distinguished service that the
University at Albany confers. It expresses our
admiration and appreciation for extraordinary
public service and leadership.
Mayor Gerald D. Jennings is the 74th Mayor
of the City of Albany, currently serving his
fourth term after taking office in 1994.
‘As Mayor, Jerry Jennings has presided over
an unprecedented reduction in crime and
meaningful increases in quality of life for all
of Albany. The most critical element of Mayor
Jennings’ public service is his unparalleled
dedication to the children of Albany.
Born in North Albany, Jennings had a
21-year career as a popular teacher and high
school administrator for che City of Albany
School District, Prior to his stunning election
victory in 1993, Jennings served 13 years as a
member of the Common Council representing
the Lth Ward.
Mayor Jennings has successfully established
collaborative partnerships with New York
State, the business community, educational
institutions, and nonprofit organizations
that have produced new development projects
representing more then $2 billion in new
investment since 1994. Major successes
include a comprehensive redevelopment of
Albany's beautiful waterfront and the
Corning Preserve, including the Hudson
River Way Pedestrian Bridge, initiation of
various programs that have produced
significant improvements to Albany's neigh-

| bothoods, implementing environmentally
sensitive policies and improving parks,
playgrounds and nature preserves within the
City of Albany.
A tireless voice for the citizens of Albany,
Mayor Jennings has received numerous
awards for his visionary and progressive
leadership and is recognized nationally for
innovative and effective government. The City
of Albany's programs, initiatives and successes
have served as models nationwide for effective
local government,
Mayor Jennings received his master’s
degree in Educational Administration from
the University at Albany and his bachelors
degree in Social Studies and Sociology from
SUNY Brockport,
