gymnasium to SEFCU Arena and down the stairs to the east
entrance of the Arena, doctoral candidates and hooding
faculty first followed by master’s candidates, bachelor’s
candidates and then the faculty. Tremaine Harris brings

Thank you, Professor Bosco.
Reverand Damhof, Trustees McCall and Crawford, Ms.
Allen, honored guests, faculty, staff, alumni, family and
friends and — most of all — our graduates, welcome to
9 Winter Commencement.
On behalf of the faculty and the entire University at
Albany Community, I offer sincere congratulations to
each of you.
You may notice there is an empty chair to my left
in the front row. It is for a very special guest who will
join us later: New York State's senior U.S. Senator --
Chuck Schumer. We are honored he will be part of this
=) celebration.

silence to remember our colleagues, friends and alumni
who are no longer with us. And let us at the same time
pay tribute to America’s service people around the
world.

You have come to this University from across New
York State, the nation, and the world. Today we join
together to celebrate the success you have achieved
here.
We know the path has not always been straight,
but you have reached your goal — and we all share
tremendous pride in you.
Many have helped you along the way, and I want to
start by recognizing our faculty who have offered you a
strong foundation for success. Would the faculty of the
University at Albany please rise and be recognized?

Thank you. We are all grateful for your wisdom
| and your dedication, and for all you do to put ““The
World Within Reach” for our students.
Personally, I have experienced the value of a
UAlbany education.
I earned my undergraduate degree here in 1969,
and a master’s degree four years later. My wife Sandra
earned two UAlbany degrees, and two of our three sons
added three more degrees to the family total.
For me and my family, as well as tens of thousands
of others, UAlbany put an incredible world of
opportunities within reach.

When I received my UAlbany degrees, I never
imagined that one day I would have the privilege of
leading this outstanding institution. Nor did I imagine
how UAIbany would evolve and grow into the
remarkable university it is today.
In my student days, there was no SEFCU Arena
and no Science Library. There was no Empire
Commons, no nanotechnology complex, not one cell
phone or personal computer. ae: hard to
believe- but we cowdn’t even text our friends
Today, our campus is a dramatically transformed
landscape, reflecting UAlbany’s development into one
of nation’s leading research universities.
Unchanged, however, are UAlbany’s mission and
the excellence of our programs.
The UAlbany of my student days prepared me well
for the changes and challenges of my life. The

knowledge you have gained during your years here will
do the same for you.
Graduates of this institution have been making a
difference for 163 years. Today you become a part of
this proud tradition and join a global network of more
than 143,000 alumni.
In a few moments, we will hear from a true
trailblazer, Frances Allen. Ms. Allen graduated in 1954,
when we were still known as Albany State Teacher’s E/ ae
College, and she went on make major contributions io
the field of computing at IBM. Her story is an
inspiration.
In October, we had four other outstanding alumni
on campus: Gregory Maguire, whose best-selling novel
spawned the long-running Broadway smash hit Wicked;
Catherine Bertini, who served as executive director of
the United Nation’s World Food Program; and brothers
Avery and Monte Lipman, co-presidents of Universal

Republic Records. Their roster of recording artists
includes Jack Johnson, Hinder and Cotbie Caillat,

There are countless stories of UAlbany alumni
making a difference all around our world, and soon
your story will be part of that narrative.
We welcome you — today’s graduating class -- to
the illustrious club of UAlbany alumni.
Now allow me to share some information about you.
We have 535 students earning undergraduates
degrees. You come from seven states and 25 countries,
including Korea, Japan, China, Chile, Bangladesh, and
Ghana.
You range in age from 19 to 63. Your average age
is 23. 51 percent are women.

Eleven are military veterans. We honor your
service.
You have studied a wide range of subjects and
earned degrees in 41 different majors.
Your most popular majors are:

e sociology,
communication,
political science,
business administration,
economics,
history,
and biology.
Our students earning graduate degrees number
380, and come from 9 states and 19 countries, including
China, India, Korea, Colombia, the Russian Federation
and Ghana.

The oldest is 63 and the youngest is 22. Your
average age is 30 and sixty-five percent of you are
women.
In sum, you reflect the rich diversity and many
strengths of the University at Albany.
You have helped create the fabric of our
remarkable community, and our community, in turn,
has offered you a broad worldview and helped prepare
you to become a true citizen of the world.
I offer my sincere congratulations to each of you.
Take pride in your accomplishment today, and set out
with confidence on the next phase of your life journey.
As Nelson Mandela has said: ‘Education is the
most powerful weapon you can use to change the
world.”

PRESIDENT PHILIP:
‘“‘We now move to the presentation of the honorary
degree. For this, we are fortunate to have with us SUNY
Trustee, and former New York State Comptroller, H.
Carl McCall.
In the time since he celebrated his college
graduation, he has made his mark through extensive
service to our state. He served as New York State’s
comptroller — the state’s chief fiscal officer -- from 1993
to 2002, and earlier in his career, he served as a New
York State senator. During the administration of
former President Jimmy Carter, he was a member of
the U.S. delegation to the United Nations. He’s also

contributed his experience and energy in many other
ways, such as serving as president of the New York City
Board of Education, and now, serving as a trustee of the
State University system. He’s committed to building the
strength of our SUNY system, and we are pleased to
have him add his voice to today’s celebration.
We are both proud and pleased to bestow upon
Frances E. Allen, the University’s highest academic
degree, the honorary doctorate of the State University
of New York.” ‘“‘The honoree will be presented by

INTERIM PROVOST PHILLIPS:
Frances Allen, you have been a truly transformative
influence in the field of computing research. During your
45-year career, you developed high-performance computing
techniques that helped move the industry forward, and you
gained respect and admiration for your pioneering research
in a male-dominated field. Your extraordinary career is a

positive example for all students and young professionals.
In 1957, you accepted a position with IBM that evolved
into a career in computing research — a field rarely entered
by women at the time. You have been widely recognized for
your fundamental work on the theory of program
optimization. You formed and led the Parallel TRANslation
group that was considered one of the top research groups in
the world working with parallelization issues. Your work
culminated in algorithms and technologies that form the
basis for the theory of program optimization and are widely
used in today’s commercial compilers throughout the
industry.
In 1989 you were appointed the first female IBM
Fellow, IBM’s highest technical honor. You have been a

strong leader in IBM’s mentor program, guiding new
employees along their own paths to success. In recognition of
your commitment, IBM established the Frances E. Allen
Women in Technology Mentoring Award. In 2000, you were
the first recipient of that award.
In 1994, you were named a Fellow of the Association for
Computing Machinery, and in 2006, you became the first
woman ever to receive the association’s Alan M. Turing
Award in computing — widely regarded as “‘the Nobel Prize
in computing’’— for contributions that fundamentally
improved the performance of computer programs in solving
problems and accelerated the use of high performance
computing.
In recognition of your extraordinary achievements, the
State University of New York, through the University at

Albany, is proud to bestow upon you the honorary degree

In a moment, we will recognize each of you, but let
us first remember one graduate who is no longer with
us. His parents and sister are here, and I'd like to ask
James, Lisa and Katie Bailey to join me.

Richard Bailey worked hard and expected to be
here today. He was majoring in sociology and
completing a minor in criminal justice. As he prepared
for graduation, he also looked beyond this date by
taking the New York City police officer entrance exam
on October 20th. To do that, he had to miss his Crime,
Law and Intergroup Relations class, and he called his
professor to let him know. That’s the kind of student he
was. Later that day, as he walked to his apartment in
downtown Albany, Richard was the victim of a
meaningless crime. A gunshot took his life.
This was a terrible loss for our community. A
young man was taken far too soon. We grieved with
Richard’s family and friends, and we continue to hold
them in our hearts and prayers.

Today we honor Richard’s life by presenting to his
family the degree he worked hard to earn. James, Lisa, and
Katie, please accept Richard’s degree on his behalf. We
greatly appreciate your joining us as we remember Richard.
