The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and uni-
versity functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks
and students of those days wore them to keep warm in
the damp and drafty 12th-century castles and halls of
learning. The gowns for the bachelor’s degree, earned after
undergraduate study, have long, pointed sleeves and are
designed to be worn closed.

The holder of the master’s degree wears a gown with
an oblong sleeve open at the wrist. The sleeve base hangs
down, and the rear part of its oblong shape is worn square
cut. The gown may be worn open or closed. An alternate
and older master’s gown is also permissible. The gown is
always worn open, has a long sleeve, which is square and
closed at the end, and has a slit near the forearm.

Gowns for the doctoral degree may also be worn open
or closed, but they carry broad velvet panels down the front
and three velvet bars on the full, round, open sleeves. The
velvet trimming may be either in black or the color distinc-

tive to the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

Academic gowns for each level are black, although a few
institutions permit doctoral recipients to wear gowns of
the characteristic institutional color.

Academic protocol allows trustees, presidents, and mar-
shals of higher education institutions to wear gowns which
are especially designed and colored. The president of the
University at Albany wears a black and royal purple gown

bearing four horizontal royal purple and gold bars on the

sleeves. The marshals gowns at UAlbany are gold and blue.

ACADEMIC’ HERALDRY

Caps may be of serge, broadcloth, or, for the doctoral
outfit only, of velvet. The tassel is black or the color
appropriate to subject, except the doctoral cap may have a
tassel of gold or bullion.

It is the hood that gives color and real meaning to the aca-
demic costume. The bachelor's hood is sometimes worn upon
completion of the course, even though the degree has not yet
actually been conferred. A black shell of varying size for the
three degrees, and of material to match the gowns, is lined
with silk in the colors of the institution conferring the degree.
UAlbanys institutional colors are royal purple and gold.

The hoods of the master’s degree recipients are a black
shell made of material to match the gown and use the insti-
tutional colors. The doctoral hood, which uses the same
institutional colors, is larger and of a different style, having
a flat panel at the back. The hood is bordered with velvet
of the proper width to indicate the degree and of the color
signifying the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of
the highest degree are worn. Holders of several doctoral
degrees may make a choice of hood for any particular
occasion. The colors indicative of the various fields of learn-

ing are as follows:

Arts, Letters, Humanities: White
Accountancy, Business, Commerce: Dusk
Economics: Copper

Education: Powder Blue

Fine Arts: Brown

Journalism: Crimson

Library Science: Lemon Yellow
Music: Pink

Philosophy: Royal Blue

Public Administration,

including Foreign Service: Teal Blue
Public Health: Salmon Pink
Science: Golden Yellow

Social Science and Social Work: Citron

Graduating students at UAlbany wear tassels of the
color representing their field of study. Honors graduates
of the baccalaureate program also wear honor medallions.
Candidates for degrees are listed as of April 2008.
No changes in status could be made after this date. Honors
for degree candidates were computed using the cumulative
grade point average as of December 24, 2007, and a projec-
tion that the student will have earned 56 or more credits at
UAlbany, of which a minimum of 40 credits are A-E graded.
Official honor status will be recalculated when spring
2008 grades are recorded and will appear on the diploma.
*** Summa Cum Laude: signifies a cumulative
grade-point average of 3.75 or above
* Magna Cum Laude: signifies a cumulative
grade-point average of 3.50-3.74
Cum Laude: signifies a cumulative

grade-point average of 3.25-3.49

Dennis W. Archer, Chairman of Dickinson Wright
PLLC, and former mayor of the City of Detroit, has
compiled an outstanding record of accomplishment, most
notably in his exemplary public service and advocacy for
the poor and underrepresented.

Mtr. Archer grew up in poverty himself in rural Michigan.
He put himself through college by working odd jobs,
earning a bachelor of science degree in education at
Western Michigan University and a doctor of law degree
from the Detroit College of Law. He spent five years as a
teacher, working with emotionally disabled youth in the
Detroit Public School system, then became a trial lawyer
and an associate professor at the Detroit College of Law
and adjunct professor at Wayne State University Law
School. He served as associate justice of the Michigan
Supreme Court from 1986 to 1990.

In 1994, Archer was elected Mayor of Detroit and over
two terms advanced an aggressive agenda for improving

city services, encouraging citizen participation, and building

coalitions among all sectors of the city’s population. He led
efforts to attract $11 billion of industrial and commercial
investment, widely viewed as the basis for Detroit's
becoming one of the nation’s first cities to receive $100
million in federal Empowerment Zone funding. He
initiated negotiations for a new Detroit Tigers stadium,
which opened in 2000, and laid the foundation for the
NEL Detroit Lions return to the city in 2002. Throughout
his service as Mayor, he strove to improve the economic
and social climate of the city, overseeing declines in overall
unemployment and crime rates.

In 2003, Archer was appointed for a one-year term
as president of the American Bar Association, the
largest voluntary professional association in the world.
As president, he sought to increase diversity in the legal
profession, holding a summit for lawyers of color that
developed strategies to support minority youth in pursuing
legal careers. He is widely credited in the profession for

“opening doors” for underrepresented groups.

Dennis Archer has continued to promote public service
and to advocate for the poor and defenseless as chairman of
the Board of Directors for the Detroit Regional Chamber
and chairman of the law firm Dickinson Wright PLLC.

The University at Albany is proud to recognize Dennis
Archer by bestowing upon him the honorary degree

Doctor of Laws, State University of New York.

UNDERGRADUATE CEREMONY SPEAKER

Mary Gordon, one of America’s most admired prose
writers, is the author of several bestselling novels, as well
as short stories, memoirs, essays, and criticism. Gordon is
known for work that explores Irish-American family life,
single motherhood, Catholic spirituality, thwarted love,
moral struggle, personal sacrifice, and female identity. She
is often praised for her deep insights, lyrical writing, and
what Los Angeles Times critic Ellen Akins called, “her
delicate rendering of the drama of consciousness. She was
named New York State Author for 2008-2010 in honor
of her achievements.

Gordon's latest work includes the memoir Circling My
Mother (2007), the collection The Stories of Mary Gordon
(2006), and the novel Pearl (2005), the story of a single
mother who sets out to prevent her only daughter, Pearl,
from killing herself in a self-imposed hunger strike.

Mary Gordon was born in 1949 in Far Rockaway,
New York. It was a high-risk birth, thought impossible
because her mother, Anna Gagliano Gordon, was a polio
victim with limited function of her lower body and was
furthermore having her first child at the age of 41. Mary
was an only child, raised in a tightly-knit Catholic home.

Her mother was the family breadwinner, working a5 3

legal secretary. Mary's father, David Gordon, died of heart

Mary Gordon, State Author

failure in 1957. The loss of her father so early in her life
was the most important event of Mary's youth, and she
later channeled her grief into many works of fiction, and
finally into her memoir, The Shadow Man: A Daughter's
Search for her Father.

Gordon's first novel, Final Payments was published in
1979, to tremendous critical acclaim. This was followed
quickly by The Company of Women in 1980. The success
of her novels helped her to obtain a teaching position at
Amherst College, where she remained for several years.
Although she continued to write poetry, essays, reviews
and nonfiction, her attention was divided by the birth of
her children, Anna and David, and it was five years before
her next book was published. That book, Men and Angels
(2005), remains her best-selling book. She followed that
up with a collection of short stories entitled Temporary
Shelter in 1987, and The Other Side, a novel, in 1988.

Gordon has also produced many works of nonfiction,
some of which were published as books. Good Boys and
Dead Girls, a collection of essays, was published in 1991,
and Seeing Through Places: Reflections on Geography and
Identity was published in 2003. When Penguin Books
approached Gordon to contribute a popular biography to

their Lives series, she chose to write on Joan of Arc.

Although she had no formal background as a historian,
the book won her the O.B. Hardison award from the
Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies.

In 1989 Gordon accepted a teaching position at Barnard,
welcoming the chance to return to the place that had nur-
tured her. After a year as an adjunct professor, she accepted
the Millicent Macintosh Chair of English. She was an
instant success as a teacher, receiving consistently out-
standing praise from her students and flooded registration
for her lecture classes. When she received tenure in 1994,
the strength of her publications was such that she was the
only faculty member without a PhD to receive tenure at
any of Columbia’ schools and affiliates.

On March 3 of this year, Gordon was presented with
the Edith Wharton Citation of Merit as State Author,
and later that day she read from her work at UAlbany.
The designations of state author and state poet are
awarded biennially under the aegis of the New York State
Writers Institute.

Mary Gordon received her A.B. from Barnard College
in 1971, and her M.A. from Syracuse University in 1973.
She and her husband, Arthur Cash, live in New York City

and Hope Valley, Rhode Island.

ALMA MATER

College of the Empire State
Mother of an army great,

Thou the molder of our fate,

Thee we sing today.

Thine the hand we clasp so strong,
Holding tho’ the years be long,
Thou the burden of our song,

Thee we sing today.

Wisdom’s duty heeds thy call,
Ever in Minerva’s thrall,

Pass the torch from one to all,
Guide each destiny.

‘Neath the Purple and the Gold,
Let thy history unfold,

sons and daughters, young and old,
Hail to Albany.
