A MESSAGE TO OUR GRADUATES

On behalf of the University at Albany, it is my distinct honor
to congratulate you on the conferral of your degree. Whether
you are receiving a diploma for a bachelor’s, master’s, or
doctoral degree, this achievement is the culmination of years
of tremendous perseverance, intellectual development, and
personal growth.

You have completed your studies at a public research university
with access to 1,200 dedicated faculty members across a vast
academic and research portfolio — an institution committed
both to academic excellence and deep engagement in the
community and the world.

During your time at UAlbany, you may have benefited from
a transformative education abroad program. Maybe you
participated in an internship that solidified your professional
plans. Or perhaps you carried out research that helps to address
a critical challenge facing society. And you have all been part of
a culturally and intellectually rich campus community, which
will serve you well in the future as you navigate an increasingly
diverse and globalized society.

‘Today, you join the ranks of 170,000 UAlbany alumni who are
having a positive impact as professionals and leaders across the
globe. We celebrate your entrance into the world as a graduate
of the University at Albany, while encouraging you to remain
involved through our Alumni Association.

No matter your program or field of study, I am confident that
your degree will open new doors of opportunity, and that you
will make important contributions wherever life takes you.

Again, my congratulations to each and every one of you on this
very significant achievement!

Sincerely,

*

‘he caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college

and university functions date back to the
Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days
wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty
12th-century castles and halls of learning. The gowns
for the bachelor’s degree, earned after undergraduate
study, have long, pointed sleeves and are designed
to be worn closed.

The holder of the master’s degree wears a gown
with an oblong sleeve open at the wrist. The sleeve
base hangs down, and the rear part of its oblong
shape is worn square cut. The gown may be worn
open or closed. An alternate and older master’s
gown is also permissible. The gown is always worn
open, has a long sleeve, which is square and closed
at the end, and has a slit near the forearm.

Gowns for the doctoral degree may also be worn
open or closed, but they carry broad velvet panels
down the front and three velvet bars on the full,
round, open sleeves. The velvet trimming may be
either in black or the color distinctive to the field
of learning to which the degree pertains.

At the University at Albany, academic gowns for
bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates are black.
Doctoral recipients wear purple gowns, characteristic of
our institution’ colors.

Academic protocol allows trustees, presidents, and
marshals of higher education institutions to wear
gowns which are especially designed and colored. The
president of the University at Albany wears a black and
royal purple gown bearing four horizontal royal purple
bars with gold braiding on the sleeves. The marshals’
gowns at UAlbany are navy blue with gold accents.

Caps may be of serge, broadcloth, or, for the doctoral
outfit only, of velvet. The tassel is black or the color
appropriate to subject, except the doctoral cap may have
a tassel of gold or bullion.

It is the hood that gives color and real meaning to the
academic costume. The hoods of the master’s degree
recipients are a black shell made of material to match
the gown and use the institutional colors. UAlbany’s
institutional colors are royal purple and gold. The
doctoral hood, which uses the same institutional colors,
is larger and of a different style, having a flat panel at the

back. The hood is bordered with velvet of the proper
width to indicate the degree and of the color signifying
the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of
the highest degree are worn. Holders of several doctoral
degrees may make a choice of hood for any particular
occasion, The colors indicative of the various fields of
learning are as follows:

Arts (Liberal Arts), Humanities, Letters

(Literature): White

Commerce; Accountancy, Business: Drab

Communication Studies: Silver Gray

Economics: Copper

Education: Light Blue

Engineering: Orange

Environmental Studies: Russet

Fine Arts: Brown

Music: Pink

Philosophy: Dark Blue

Public Administration, Public Policy: Peacock Blue

Public Health: Salmon Pink

Social Science, Natural Science: Golden Yellow

Social Work: Citron

Graduating students at UAlbany wear tassels of the color
representing their field of study. Honors graduates of
the baccalaureate program also wear honor medallions.

Candidates for degrees are listed as of
April 11, 2016. No changes in status could be made
after this date. Honors for degree candidates were
computed using the cumulative grade point average as of
this date and a projection that the student will have
earned 56 or more credits at UAlbany, of which a
minimum of 40 credits are A-E graded. Official honor
status will be recalculated when term grades are
recorded and will appear on the diploma.

MINERVA

c= the University at Albany’s beginnings as the New York State Normal College, Minerva, the Roman
goddess of wisdom, has been the institution's enduring symbol.

The figure of Minerva and the Latin motto, Sapientia et sua et docendi causa (“Wisdom, both for its own sake and for
the sake of teaching”) have appeared on the University seal since
about 1913. Today, Minerva, wearing her distinctive helmet,
continues to symbolize the University’s proud past and
long-standing reputation for educational excellence.

* UAlbany’s seven-foot-plus white plaster statue of Minerva
was purchased in 1888.

* While there is no official record of where she came from,
remembrances have it that the statue was purchased with
funds from a $1 student fee collected for make-up exams.

* The Minerva statue was originally located at 88 Willett
St. in Albany when the University was the New York State
Normal College. In 1906, when a devastating fire broke
, out in the college’s administrative offices, a brave
7 custodian, Charles Wurtham, rescued the statue
from the burning building.

* Minerva assumed her new home in the rotunda of
Draper Hall when UAlbany was the State College for
Teachers. For more than six decades, she was a
popular meeting place for students. “Meetcha at
Minnie” was a favorite phrase and her photograph
appeared frequently in UAlbany yearbooks.

© In January 1962, UAlbany’s Minerva achieved
national fame when an article about the teacher's
college appeared in an issue of the Saturday
Review and she was pictured on the cover.

© In 1966, asa gift to the University, the senior
Class of 1967 moved the statue from the
downtown campus to the new main campus and
paid for her refurbishment. The Class named
themselves the “Guardians of Minerva.”

* In 1987 Minerva was rededicated and today
graces the lobby of the Science Library.

To reclaim its reputation as a pioneer and dominant institution of learning in a competitive and evolving
school system in New York State, the Normal School establishes IN. Re-brancied as the

curricula, faculty and the recruitment of students to prepare secondary school teachers.

While on campus, Cifuentes was involved in several
groups on campus, such as the EY Lead Scholars
program, and volunteers with the Riis Settlement
House to provide educational resources to immigrant
students. Outside of his busy schedule, Cifuentes
enjoyed spending time by the fountain: “I feel it brings
people together, representing what UAlbany is about.
‘The fountain is my favorite place because it makes me
very proud of UAlbany.” Cifuentes is very grateful for
the scholarship support he has received at UAlbany:
“Thank you for helping me during my academic
development... you have given me confidence to
continue believing in my capacities to move forward
and achieve my life goals.”

Victoria Farrell of Dannemora, N.Y., is the recipient
of The Joyce and Martin Kenosian Scholarship. Majoring

career in medicine and public health. “I
hope to serve not only the underserved
people in my community, but the
world.” Majoring in human biology

Nicolette Darois of Ava, N.Y., is the
recipient of The Mbysliborski Women’s
Golf Scholarship and a proud member of
the women’s golf team, which was the
2015 MAAC Champion. A business-
administration major, Darois looks
forward to furthering her education: “T

The varsity weight room was Darois’
favorite place on campus: “It’s where

I can let out the most stress!” She
has enjoyed all of her professors and
classes, each one bringing a different
approach to her education. The
Mysliborski Scholarship inspired Darois
to put more into her academics and
her golf game. “It means the world
to my parents and me that my efforts
in the sport of women’s golf are being
recognized,” she observes.

Staten Island, N.Y., native Nicholas
Martucci has been a recipient of
The Scott M. McGovern ‘87 Memorial
Scholarship during his entire UAlbany
career: “I would like to send a great
big thank you for granting me The
McGovern Scholarship for a fourth
straight year. It was an honor to accept
this scholarship once again and it filled
me with joy to attend UAlbany for my
senior year,” he says. An informatics
major with a minor in art, Martucci

has been eagerly looking forward
to graduation and the transition to
a career. He credits The McGovern
Scholarship with allowing him to
have the best possible experience at
UAlbany: “Thanks to the financial
assistance that the — scholarship
provided, I have been able to pursue
my dreams and gain opportunities
in my college career that would have
been otherwise impossible.”

Lester Ledgister Jr.

Sociology major Lester Ledgister Jr.
of Bronx, N.Y., is the recipient of The
Steven F. Klein °77 Scholarship. While he
graduates with minors in psychology
and journalism, Ledgister was not
always so confident in his writing skills
as a journalist: “During my sophomore
year, I was doubting my ability as a
writer.” However, Ledgister received
some powerful reinforcement when
his first paper in Steve Barnes’ Media
& Ethics class was returned to him. He

recalls: “Professor Barnes told me it
was one of the best papers he had ever
seen a student write. This encouraged
me as a writer, and I went on to receive
A’s in my two journalism classes that
semester.” Ledgister has been involved
in several groups on campus, including
the Middle Earth Peer Assistance
Program and New Life Seventh
Day Adventist Youth Ministries. He
plans to earn his master’s degree in
industrial/organizational psychology.

Dear Graduate,

Congratulations and welcome to the UAlbany Alumni Association. Your long
hours of study and hard work have paid off - you are now an alumnus of the
University at Albany! As I salute and welcome you to our ranks, I would like to
speak a little about your continued association with UAlbany.

Being a UAlbany alum comes with many benefits. I urge you to tap into the
power of the more than 170,000 strong UAlbany alumni network for career
opportunities and to stay connected with friends and classmates.

As a GOLD (Graduate of the Last Decade) alum, you'll also be receiving
invitations to special events designed especially for you, such as the GOLD
Schmooze in New York City each fall and the annual GOLD party at
Homecoming each October. Find out more about being a GOLD alum by
visiting our web page at www.alumni.albany.edu/GOLD.

There are lots of easy ways to stay in touch and make sure you get the latest
news: Connect with fellow alums through the alumni Facebook group, do some
professional networking through LinkedIn, or learn about UAlbany news and
GOLD events by following @UAlbanyGOLD on Twitter. You can also stay
connected through UAlbany’s free alumni online community, which includes
an alumni directory, UCAN online networking database, permanent email and
much more.

Whenever you are on campus, stop by the Alumni House to say hello and take
advantage of our Alumni Concierge Program, which offers computer access,
free parking and more to visiting alumni. We hope you'll consider the Alumni
House your new home away from home! We are here to help you get and stay
connected.

With warm regards and best wishes for success,

Mother of an army great,
Thou the molder of our fate,
Thee we sing today.

Thine the hand we clasp so strong,
Holding tho’ the years be long,
Thou the burden of our song,
‘Thee we sing today.

Ways of pleasantness are thine,
Leading where in wisdom’s shrine,
Joy and cheer, and hope divine,
Ever dwell for aye.

Thine the voice whose call we hear,
‘Thine the hand which holds us near,
Thine the heart, so true, so dear,
Cherished, loved alway.

Wisdom’s duty heeds thy call,
Ever in Minerva’s thrall,

Pass the torch from one to all,

Guide each destiny.
’Neath the Purple and the Gold,
Let thy history unfold,
Sons and daughters, young and old,
Hail to Albany.
