ACTIVE PIN
ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA, the first Greek letter so-
rority among Negro college women, was founded at
Howard University, Washington, DC, on January
16, 1908. Ethel Hedgeman (Lyle), who originated
the idea and whose efforts were greatly assisted by
Miss Ethel Robinson, a member of the faculty, was
joined in the enterprise by Lillian Burke, Beulah
Burke, Margaret Flagg (Holmes), Marie Woolfolk
(Taylor), Lavinia Taylor, Anna Brown, Lucy Stowe,
and Margery Hill. Their avowed purpose for orga-
nizing was “‘to cultivate and encourage high scho-
lastic and ethical standards, improve the social
status of the race, promote unity and friendship
among college women, and keep alive within the
alumnae an interest in college life and progressive
movements emanating therefrom.” In 1930 the or-
ganization was incorporated under the laws of the
District of Columbia, at which time the original unit
became Alpha Chapter and a policy of expansion
began.
In 1946 the Boule approved a policy which pro-
vides that race, color, or creed shall not be included
in the qualifications of membership. A phase of the
organization’s activities is its study, purchase, and
maintenance of houses for undergraduates on cam-
puses where the need is found.
Government Government is vested in the con-
BAIRD’S MANUAL
vention which is held biennially and is known as
the boule; during the intervals between conventions
the Directorate (Board of Directors), composed of
seventeen national officers, administers the affairs
of the sorority. Chapters are grouped geographi-
cally into ten regions, including an international re-
gion, with a director in charge of each.
Traditions and Insignia The badge is shaped
like anivy leaf with a green enamel center bordered
with pearls and the letters AKA in gold, one letter
at each point of the leaf. In the center of the pin are
the letters Q and Y. The pledge pin is a small ivy
leaf of green enamel. A special pin of three small
ivy leaves enclosed in a circle of pearls with a letter
on each leaf is worn by the honorary members. The
colors are salmon pink and apple green, and the
flower is the tea rose.
Publications The official publication is a quar-
terly magazine, The Ivy Leaf. A Manual of Proce-
dures is also published. Newsletters from the
Supreme Basileus (International President) and the
Undergraduate Activities Committee are mailed pe-
riodically to all members.
Funds and Philanthropies In keeping with its
declared purpose Alpha Kappa Alpha has engaged
in a varied program of civic, social, and educational
service. Among these undertakings are the large
number of scholarships, varying in amounts from
$25 to $1,000 and more, awarded annually by chap-
ters to high school girls to make it possible for them
to continue their education. The National Body
awards $2,000 annually for undergraduate member
scholarships or for graduate member foreign fellow-
ships. A health program, sponsored by the National
Body, is promoted through each of its local chap-
ters to educate for and to encourage better stan-
dards of living, to increase service and health
facilities for all groups, and to cooperate with es-
tablished health agencies to bring the benefits of
their services more fully to every segment of the
population. This program is the outgrowth of the
volunteer Mississippi Health Project, which has
carried out by means of a mobile clinic in Holmes
County, Mississippi from 1935 to 1940. Another ac-
tivity is the American Council on Human Rights,
which is sponsored cooperatively with five other
Greek-letter organizations. As a result of global sen-
sitization, chapters across the country have
adopted African villages where they have sup-
ported the construction of wells, health clinics,
schools and other projects.
