MEMORANDUM
DATE: 9 June 1971
FROM: Walter M. Tisdale
TOs President Louls T. Benezet

SUBJECT: Campus Progress Report #173 = Planting Contract
Academle Group 11 and State Quadrangle

The two year maintenance and guarantee period for the above cited contract
has now cone to a close, and thls morning, a final Inspection of the planting occurred
with representatives of all parties concerned attending. A general survey of all the
pots, beds and other plantings Involved In thls particular contract was conductedon
site. The work was considered highly satisfactory and was unanimously accepted by all
concerned, Including the undersigned for the University. Henceforward, the planting
contractor will have nothing whatsoever to do with these plantings and the sole
responsIbi lity will fall upon the Plant Department for malntenance of al! plants,
shrubs, trees, etc.

This Inspection was the second conducted this springs about a month ago

a preliminary Inspection was conducted, and at that time, major areas for correction
were Identified. Prinolpal among the corrections was replacement of some fifteen beech
trees on and around the great clrele, replacoment of Viburnum In the pots along the
north and west perimeters of the academic podlum, replacement of pads of Ivy that had
not survived the two year period sInee the original planting, and sporadic shrub rem
placement throughout the remaining scope of the contract which was very nominal and
considered normal, All replacement shrubs seemed to be virile, adequate In size, ete.,
and In summary, we feel that we hawe accomplished a good Job. Many compliments have
been recelved onthese plantings, particularly now that spring has shown them In full
flower.

The difference In the State Quad was particularly marked, as the original
varieties and plantings there had not come through the past winter very well. Thase
have all been replaced by more hardy varieties and new stock, and the Improvement
In the appearance of the State Quadrangle Is most marked,

By Information copy of thls memorandum, the Plant Department Is notified
of the acceptance, and advised to Initlate maintenance of these areas. Fred Mastriannt
was Invited to accompany the Inspection party, and is thoroughly advised of these
results. Valuable advice from the planting contractor to Fred Mastriann! and Fred
Fortune took place throughout the survey, which should stand the University In good
stead through the coming years.
