SUBJECT: Campus Progress Report No. 214
Modify Fire Alarm System, Install Horns in Dorms |, 2, and 3
SUCF Project No. 01-271

Yesterday bids were opened on the above project and we were fortunate to
receive four bids with good competition and prices. Bids ranged from $33,215
to $59,400. The lowest bidder was Henzel Electric Co Inc., Albany, New York.

This contractor is especially good, having done previous work for us in
the Alden and Waterbury Halls kitchen rehabilitation jobs. Owing to his low
bid and the exce|lence of his work, there is no question but that he will be
awarded the contract as soon as the paper work clears through OGS and the
Construction Fund.

Actual work should be starting in late April or early May. Most of this
will constitute no interference with the occupancy of Dormitories |, 2, and 3,

the dormitories involved. Even that portion which will require access to some
rooms will be minimal and can be arranged at times when the dormitories are at
low occupancy. We anticipate that all work will be completed prior to the

occupancy of the dormitories at the beginning of the Fall semester. Since
Dormitory 2 (Indian Quadrangle) already has horns installed the only work
involved there is the addition of four more alarms, which would not constitute
any conflict with occupancy.

The general nature of thls work is to switch from the bel| type fire
alarm to the horn type fire alarm to increase the level of sound and to
positively insure that al! occupants are alerted in case of fire. Experience
has shown us that the bell type system while 98% effective, left something to

be desired. The horn type system will be absolutely conclusive. A few
additional horns are also being added at locations where experience has shown
this to be desirable. Accomplishment of the job will improve fire safety in

all dormitories on the new campus.
