National Research and Development Center on Improving Student Learning and Achievement in English established with $12.5 million U.S. Department of Education grant. The center will be directed by Judith Langer and Arthur Applebee of the School of Education. Partnering in the research, which will be headquartered at Albany, will be the Universities of Wisconsin-Madison, Washington, and Oklahoma. The center's mission will be to specify "those features of curriculum and instruction essential to student achievement in English, including skills with oral and written language and literature." They are looking for and will publicize best practices, and work with teachers to develop most effective practices for all students.
