Terrorists destroy the World Trade Center's Twin Towers and Pentagon. Classes were canceled on September 11 and 12. On September 11, nearly 1,000 students, faculty, and staff attended a candlelight vigil around the main fountains on the Uptown Campus. On September 12, an estimated 3,000 people on campus walked together, sang, prayed, and joined hands in a Campus Unity Walk. Additionally, other University schools and faculty held events in the days following 9/11 including readings by English faculty sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute, a session on coping with trauma from the School of Social Welfare, a session on the policy implications of the tragedy from Rockefeller College, and many teach-ins. A memorial service was held on September 21 in the Recreation and Convention Center on the Uptown Campus with members of the larger Albany and Capital District communities.
