New York State Normal School/College Records, 1844-1914

The University at Albany, SUNY was founded in 1844 as the New York State Normal School and charged with the training of teachers from throughout the state. In 1890 the school became the New York State Normal College to demonstrate that the school had a higher status than the secondary schools it trained its students to lead. The change came with a shift in curriculum towards methodology over subject matter and a professional identity. In 1914 the school shifted to training teachers within a liberal arts curriculum, and changed its name again to the New York State College for Teachers.
