- Bound in reddish brown cloth over boards. Upper cover has intersecting borders stamped in blind with title and cover illustration (featuring a small boy reading a book, surrounded by toys and several animals) stamped in gilt. Lower cover has intersecting borders and ornamental centerpiece (of a stylized sun) stamped in blind.

- 1864 Willis P. Hazard (Philadelphia) imprint, c 1851 James K. Simon, inscribed 1865; this volume includes translations (adapted 'to the taste of American children') of 1) 'Mein Spielen ist lernen,' p7-62 [attributed, when it was published in German, by John Weik (Philadelphia, fl. 1850's), to 'August Eggers'] and 2) ' [Frederic Adolphus] Krummacher's Parables,' p63-111; the present illustrated translation was previously printed from identical plates and published in Philadelphia by Simon (1852), and J.W. Moore (1853 and later); the blind stamping on Hazard's cover is the same as on Moore's edition; the title for 1) is a partial quote, 'My play is study and my study play,' from a poem by a Dutch poet for children, Hieronymus van Alphen (1746-1803) in his 'Kleine gedigten voor kindern' (1787)front and back cover design and rulings blind stamped on brown cloth, spine & cover titles stamped in gold
