Raymond (1840-1918) was a renowned mining engineer, editor,essayist and author of several children's books; the illustrations are by various artists [these stories may have originated in Sunday school magazines, Raymond having been active in Henry Ward Beecher's Plymouth Church as its Sunday school superintendent; other evidence points to prior publication in The Christian Union [original title in 1870 was Sabbath at Home], edited at first by Henry Ward Beecher], many engraved by John Karst; spine title-field stamped in gold on faded red cloth (thus red titles); spine design and front cover titles and design stamped in black
