- Abstract:
- The records of the United Tenants of Albany (UTA) document its founding and record its daily activities as a non-profit organization campaigning for the rights of tenants in Albany from 1972 to 2001. Topics included in this collection are affordable housing, effective housing and health code enforcement, the UTA's protests against the loan policies of several banks and rent control. This collection also contains the UTA's administrative records, including its minutes, organizational structure, financial records, mission statement and by-laws. The subject file concerning the UTA's campaign for the effective enforcement of Albany's building code is especially comprehensive. The rent control subject file is also strong.
- Historical Note:
- The UTA was founded by Roger and Maria Markovics in 1971 and was officially incorporated in 1973. The UTA is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Albany's low-to-moderate-income families and businesses with safe, affordable living and working space. Allying itself with other housing organizations, members of the UTA work to educate Albany's tenants of their rights, to correct housing code violations and to create and maintain a rent control program in Albany. Throughout the years, the UTA has made strides in making Albany a safer and more affordable environment. Several of their landmark cases include the Daniel Potter and Frank Romeo code violation cases of the 1970s and the bank protests of the 1980s.
