Raymond (1840-1918) was a renowned mining engineer, editor, essayist and author of several children's books; the illustrations are by various artists [these stories may have originated in Sunday school magazines, Raymond having been active in Henry Ward Beecher's Plymouth Church as its Sunday school superintendent]; the first story alludes to 18 hundred and 69 Christmases; three stories are by Sarah D. Raymond, and refer to their appearance first in The Christian Union [a periodical published by J.B.
