- Abstract:
- The E. Ogden Bush Papers document his work as a New York State Senator during the years 1958-1965. The papers include legislative bills and files, newspapers, correspondence, resolutions, and various published materials. The subject files include topics such as conservation, pigeons, education, highways, motor vehicles, labor, Delaware County, Greene County, Sullivan County, Ulster County, and teachers. The bulk of the collection dates from Bush's later tenure as a State Senator from 1960 to 1965, rather than from his first term in office. Please note that the collection does not include materials related to his service in the New York State Assembly.
- Historical Note:
- Elmer Ogden Bush was born on September 14, 1898 in DeLancey, New York. His early schooling took place in a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from the Delaware Academy at Delhi. In January 1920, he graduated from the University of Buffalo with the degree of Doctor of Dentistry. He married Ella Vitt on May 9, 1925, and they had four children. Before he embarked upon his political career, Senator Bush was a successful dentist. From 1933 to 1937, he served in the New York State Assembly representing Delaware County. In 1957, he was elected to the New York State Senate as a Republican and served until 1965 in the 34th District. For twelve years, he also served as the Delaware County Republican Chairman, but in 1959 he lost that position to Edwyn E. Mason. Bush was a member of the American Legion, Farm Bureau, and the Freemasons. He was the president of the Delaware County Broadcasting Company and of the Council at Delhi Agricultural and Technical Institute (now SUNY Delhi). Bush Hall on the campus of SUNY Delhi is named for him. He was also the director of the First National Bank and Trust Company of Walton, and he was an operator of Station WDLA at Walton.
