Records that document the history of the University at Albany, SUNY and its predecessor schools.
The University Archives documents the history of the University at Albany, SUNY from its origin in 1844 as the New York State Normal School to train teachers for New York State to its present status as a comprehensive research university. The department collects, manages, and provides access to permanent university records for research use. This includes the administrative records of the university, student groups, faculty, alumni, and affiliated organizations. Collecting and preserving university records documents our history and promotes transparency and accountability.

This series is made up of materials from the first incarnation of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), before its split into the College of Fine Arts and Humanities, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and College of Science and Mathematics. During the period covered by this series, the functions of those colleges were administered by Divisions along similar organizational lines. This series contains some materials that both predate the organization of CAS as well as other materials from after it was subdivided. The bulk of the materials however focus on the college's administration and the various committees that the College of Arts and Sciences Deans L. Gray Cowan and Charles Colman served on during the 1960s and 1970s.

The Donald J. Newman Papers document the career of the Professor of Criminal Justice and Dean of the School of Criminal Justice (1977-1984) including correspondence, subject files, adminstrative records, evaluations of other universities and his criminal justice projects.

This series contains correspondence between Dr. Newman as Dean with faculty and prospective faculty as well as with students, former students, friends, and colleagues about their careers and projects. The files on individuals often contain correspondence that dates before his appointment as Acting Dean in 1977. Included are correspondence with famed criminologist Marvin E. Wolfgang (1961-83) and the former Dean of the School of Criminal Justice and School President Vincent O'Leary (1968-77). The bulk of the material dates between 1968 and 1983.

The materials in this series are from the period in which the department was known as Creative Services. Some photographic materials were created by the department while older materials in the series were produced elsewhere and retained by them for the creation of promotional material.
