This series consists of early school and career documents from Vienna, records and correspondence documenting Fried's arrival and early years in the U.S., employment searches, as well as records of his appointments to positions with the U.S. Army and the United Nations. Also included in this series are texts of radio interviews given by Fried, 1949-1975.

John H. E. Fried served as Legal Officer and Program Officer of the United Nations Technical Assistance Administration, headquartered in New York City, from 1951-1954. The series contains some correspondence, primarily concerning personnel matters, as well as memoranda and agreements dated 1948-1954.
This series contains correspondence and typescripts associated with the UNESCO book project, The Third Reich (1955). The correspondence is predominantly from the years, 1949-1952, although the inclusive dates of the entire series are 1938 to 1984. The typescripts are in English, French and German.

John Fried served as Legal Consultant to the Somalia delegation at the U.N. from 1966-1970. This series contains primarily reports composed by Fried on various issues dealing with Somalia / French Somaliland.
This series is divided into two sections. The first section contains typescripts and correspondence concerning Fried's collaborative work with Richard A. Falk entitled Vietnam and International Law. An Analysis of the Legality of the U.S. Military Involvement, published in 1967. The second section deals with Fried's activities with the with the Lawyers Committee on American Policy Towards Vietnam (1965-1975) and later with the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy (1981-1990). The series contains correspondence, as well as agenda, minutes of meetings and public statements.

The collection of pamphlets is extensive and contains pamphlets on most of the subject areas in which Fried was interested. These include: Vietnam and Southeast Asia, Nuclear war and disarmament, the United Nations and treaties, Somalia, Bangladesh, Cuba, Chile, Korea, Israel, Palestine and the Middle East, the Soviet Union, Human Rights, Rights of the Child and Women's Rights.
