Records that document the history of the University at Albany, SUNY and its predecessor schools.
The University Archives documents the history of the University at Albany, SUNY from its origin in 1844 as the New York State Normal School to train teachers for New York State to its present status as a comprehensive research university. The department collects, manages, and provides access to permanent university records for research use. This includes the administrative records of the university, student groups, faculty, alumni, and affiliated organizations. Collecting and preserving university records documents our history and promotes transparency and accountability.

Includes accession and withdrawal records, 1929-1957; book circulation records, 1929-1960; correspondence, reports and minutes of bibliographers' meetings, 1966-1979; and bound volumes of the University Libraries newsletter, 1972-1976; announcements, schedules of events, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and brochures relating to Community University Day, 1972-1983; memoranda and pamphlets about access policy, 1979-1983; and annual reports, 1979-1987.

Includes minutes, committee reports, correspondence and by-laws of the Faculty Council. Bound with the minutes of the Faculty Council, 1944-47, are minutes of the Faculty-Administration Council. Committees of the Faculty Council included the Committee on Academic Freedom, the Community Liaison Committee, the Faculty Welfare and Obligations Committee, the Social Affairs Committee, the Elections Committee, and the Policies of Promotion, Tenure and Dismissal Committee (Faculty Handbook, 1962, p. 16). The functions of the Faculty Council and its committees were transferred to the Faculty Senate in 1966.

Office of Business Affairs Records, 1914-1978

Contains budget and administrative planning records from the Business Office and the Office of the Dean for Administration, primarily dating from the mid- to late-1960s.

Center for Community Studies Records, 1946-1976

14.2 cubic ft.
Created in 1950 in part to study education in school districts. The Center's mission was to identify the research factors that aid in constructing and maintaining strong democratic communities and to promote such factors through education.

This series contains materials relating directly to the activities and programs of the Center for Community Studies. Topics of interest include action research projects, extensive course materials, the Three Wishes Project, the development of educational television, the New York State Citizens' Council, the Poliomyelitis Project of 1956, in-school testing materials, student and faculty questionnaires and study notes, materials on different areas in which CCS was of service to the wider community, student papers and projects, the Study of Opinions on Medicine and Child Health of 1956, the University-Community Cooperation Project, and materials on workshops given by CCS. This series is restricted due to the inclusion of student material. Consult a member of the Department of Special Collections and Archives' staff for further details.
