Abstract:
Francis T. Purcell, Malverne, NY, was a Republican member of the New York State Assembly from 1964 through 1966 and county executive of Nassau County from 1978 to 1987. Prior to his election to the Assembly, Purcell served as a Village of Malverne Trustee, 1947-1955, and Mayor of the Village of Malverne, 1955-1963.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of materials from Francis t. Purcell's service in the New York State Assembly, including correspondence, bills, subject files, reports, and press releases.

Biographical / Historical:

Francis T. Purcell was born on August 11, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. Purcell went to Malverne High School where he played baseball. Purcell signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but decided to enlist in the army in 1941 instead of playing. After his time in the Army, Purcell was elected mayor of Malverne in 1955.

Purcell was the Republican nominee for Nassau;s 1st district seat and won the election to the New York State Assembly in 1964. Purcell was a member of the New York State Assembly until 1965, when he was appointed as Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead. In 1977, Purcell was elected County Executive of Nassau County and held this position until 1987. After his retirement, Purcell wanted to joint Cablevision as a political analyst and commentator. Purcell had three children and lived with his wife in West Palm Beach, Florida, until his death on May 18, 2014.

Acquisition information:
Francis T. Purcell originally donated his papers to Syracuse University in 1966. In 2006, the papers were transferred to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archvies.
