- Scope and Content:
This collection is made up of Birr's professional papers, with the majority documenting his time at the University at Albany, SUNY from 1980 through his retirement in 1990. The majority of the files in this collection document Birr's activities serving in the University Senate, and include meeting minutes, memoranda and task force reports. The collection also contains files documenting the History Department during Birr's time. These include memoranda, enrollment spreadsheets, department meeting minutes and several files on Birr's work on religious history. This collection also contains drafts, research and notes, and correspondence related to his book, A Tradition of Excellence: The Sesquicentennial History of the University at Albany, State University of New York 1844-1994.
- Biographical / Historical:
Kendall A. Birr was a Professor of History at the University at Albany, SUNY. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1948, Birr taught at the University at Albany from 1952 through 1990. He was named a Collins Fellow in 1985. After his retirement from the University, Birr published A Tradition of Excellence: The Sesquicentennial History of the University at Albany, State University of New York 1844-1994 in 1994. Birr died 2004 December 26.
