The University Archives documents the history of the University at Albany, SUNY from its origin in 1844 as the New York State Normal School to train teachers for New York State to its present status as a comprehensive research university. The department collects, manages, and provides access to permanent university records for research use. This includes the administrative records of the university, student groups, faculty, alumni, and affiliated organizations. Collecting and preserving university records documents our history and promotes transparency and accountability.

General Electric- Non-Project Cirrus, 1891-1993 21.0 cubic ft.
The research laboratory at General Electric was the launching pad for some of Vincent Schaefer's most pivotal scientific work. This series contains research notes, photographs, reports (published and unpublished, internal and external), and correspondence relating to all of his more famous experiments as well as a range of lesser-known work accomplished during his years at the G.E. Research Laboratory in Schenectady. The materials cover topics such as smoke/artificial fog generation, surface chemistry, studies of ice and snow particles, and early cloud seeding. The series is divided according to areas of specific interest to Schaefer as well as correspondence and publications.

Gertrude Shill Papers, 1888-1934 5 cubic ft.
Contains primarily Shill's extensive college notes which represent early twentieth century curriculum in History, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics as well as teaching methods of the day. This academic material also includes a collection of Textbooks (1910-1932). In addition to her own papers, the collection also includes academic materials belonging to Gertrude's uncle, George Shill, including instruction pages, question pages and completed assignments from the International Correspondence School in Scranton, PA (1898-1900).

A student film narrating the evolution of school into a research university during the 1960s and 1970s.
Series 1 is comprised almost entirely of photographs taken by the University Photo Service, a separate student organization that has supplied much of the ASP 's photography over the years. However, some photographs may have been taken by ASP staff. Additionally, a small number of images originate from other sources, including the Associated Press, College Press Service, and Liberation News Service. A single illustration, noted in the container list below, is also included. While many of these images appeared in issues of the ASP , others may never have been published.

This series contains videotaped interviews conducted by Maureen Didier with graduates from the Master's of Social Welfare (MSW) classes of 1967 and 1977. Mary McCarthy also conducted interviews with current students in the master's program in 1991. According to the School of Social Welfare Records, attendees of the School's 25th anniversary Convocation on April 11, 1991 informally viewed these interviews during the reception portion of the event.

The Louis C. Jones Papers consist primarily of the circular letters sent by Jones during World War II to former students of the State Teachers College and replies to these letters from service men and women. Jones was employed by the New York State College for Teachers, first as an Instructor (1934-42) and later as an Associate Professor of English (1942-46).

The papers of Lou Ismay document the history of the Environmental Forum at the University at Albany, SUNY, (State University of New York at Albany as it was then known) from 1969-1977, as well as the Environmental Studies Program. The collection contains information on the Environmental Forum, the Protect Your Environment Club, administrative files, student writings, subject files, correspondence, and publications. The student writings are from Ismay's Environmental Forum classes from 1969-1977. This series is restricted from use, along with parts of the Environmental Forum and correspondence series. This course was held under different numbers during its existence, including A&S 201 and Env.250a and b. The strength of the collection lies not in the educational departments that are represented by the collection, but by the overall impression one can gather about the rise of environmental awareness among students at the university. Series 1 contains materials Dr. Blanchard published while at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the State University of New York at Albany as well as after his retirement. The topics covered by these publications include the history of science, water-to-air transfer, aerobiology, sea salt aerosols, volcanic electricity, and surface charge. There are also materials covering his studies of bubbles, water droplets, and rain. Along with his scientific publications, Dr. Blanchard also wrote letters to editors, comments and replies to articles, book reviews, obituaries, and autobiographical articles. Dr. Blanchard published materials from the early 1950s to the early 2000s but the majority of materials in are from 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
