Schaefer's connection with the University at Albany began in 1959 when the school was still known as the New York State Teachers College, located in downtown Albany. When Schaefer began the highly successful Atmospheric Physics Program via the Loomis School in Connecticut, he attracted the attention of Dean Oscar Lanford and President Evan Collins of the New York State Teachers College. They asked Schaefer to come teach at their Albany school, and within his first year as a faculty member, the idea for the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC) was born. Officially established in February 1961, it was originally located in the old General Electric hangar at Schenectady Airport. Although the former New York State Teachers College expanded to the current uptown Albany campus in the mid-1960s, officially becoming the University at Albany, State University of New York, the ASRC remained centered in Schenectady at that time. Meanwhile, the Atmospheric Physics Program that began at the Loomis School shifted to Albany to be under the sponsorship of the ASRC, where it became the Natural Sciences Institute (NSI). However, since the program's roots were not originally with the ASRC and University at Albany, those records comprise their own series within this collection (Series #5).

This series contains records related to the events of the Pride Center and other LGBTQ organizations. The Pride Center is in charge of planning Capital Pride. Records in this series include documentation relating to the planning of Captial Pride, as well as photos from the actual celebration. This series also includes records related to the center's awards dinners, themed nights, and events at the center itself. This series also contains records related to the events that membrs of the center could attend. These records include talks from the SUNY Gay Alliance. Stonewall Rememberance Days, and other organization in th Capital Region and New York City. This series also contains CD's from the Pride Events. Some folders are restricted due to personal information. Please consult an archivist before use.

The General Reference Collection was created by archivists to hold information on campus history that is not part of any organic record group. The collection contains material from a variety of outside sources, excepts from newspapers and other publications, press releases and promotional materials, and loose university records.
This series contains information on internal audits of the Office's budget, animal research policies, correspondence with research centers and institutes, reports from committees on which the Office played a part and correspondence with academic departments regarding their graduate programs.
This series contains documentation of research and faculty awards including FRAP, correspondence with academic departmnets and several university collectives, as well as minutes, memoranda and correspondence related to graduate program development and various committees and university consortiums with which the Office of Research and Graduate Studies was affiliated with. Tanya Melich was director of the Election Research Unit for ABC News during the 1964 Republican National Convention. As a result, she accumulated numerous papers regarding the presidential primaries in New Hampshire and California, as well as the Republican National Convention and inaugural celebration. The series includes voting reports and analysis, general information on the convention, schedules, biographical information of candidates and platforms, committee meeting notes, and news clippings. The series begins with the New Hampshire primary in March, continues with the California and later primaries, the Republican National Convention in July, and ends with the inauguration of 1965.

This series contains audio recordings of special events and everyday activities at the Downtown Community School and Camp Woodland. The Department digitized hundreds of reel-to-reel audio recordings to date.
The Camp Woodland audio recordings may be one of the more significant components of the collection. While at Camp Woodland, Norman Studer recorded numerous oral histories of many of the indigenous Catskill residents as well as the annual Folk Festival of the Catskills. Studer was acutely aware that he was in a position to capture the ethnographic folk culture, music, and ecology of a fading era. In many instances, the tapes represent the only extant recordings and variations of a number of songs.

Topics of interest include administrators and in-service education, adult basic education, Albany Public Schools, the Argentine Nationals Programs, the Behavior Research Program, the Bennington Project, Black Studies, the Center for Executive Development, co-operative community college programs, courses, curricula, the Doctor of Arts Program, the Doctor of Education Program, educational administration, educational media, educational research, the Experimental College, the Milne School, National Defense Education Act, Peace Corps training program in India, the Regional Education Laboratory, reading teachers, school psychology, special education, summer institutes, training of teachers, the Training Program for Subject Supervisors, the Two-Year College Consortium, vocational rehabilitation, and workshops.

There are three types of case files that Daniel Button created: Military approval applications, requests for military discharges/reassignment, and Albany-related problems. These are organized chronologically and then alphabetically by the last name of the individual concerned in the case file. The military requests are restricted because the military applications reveal personal information, such as medical examination records, social security numbers, and school grades. The military hardship discharges are restricted because they contain sensitive information regarding individuals and their families. The other cases are a broad range of requests, many of which concern postage and censoring, notably obscene advertisements in mail, which Button wrote house Resolutions against. Other requests concern visas, political opinions on the Vietnam War, questions about Vietnam, the Cold War, and other current events. There are also a few requests concerning moving costs, patents, and radioactive contamination.

This series contains many press releases concerning new bills, Button's comments on current events and materials related to Button's speaking engagements. There are a number of teleprompt papers from televised events. The teleprompt paper remains connected together like an accordion and is delicate to handle. There are also a number of different drafts of Button's speeches, with handwritten revisions.

This series contains records generated by the Social Justice Center in the process of its ongoing mission to provide space and services to social justice organizations. The records include financial reports, correspondence, and meeting minutes from the Coordinating Committee and later the centers board. Also included are documents related to fundraising, including dance and walk-a-thons, grant proposals, and related materials. The records of the Centro de Progresso, the only member group of the SJC with material in this collection, can be found in this series. Finally, there is a small amount of material in Electronic File format from the planning of a workshop of the Dismantling Racism project.

This series consists of materials directly related to the creation, operation, and termination of the Environmental Studies Program. Best represented are the early years during the creation phase, when several committees were planning the program. These include the President's Advisory Committee and the Program Planning Committee that operated in 1970-1971. These were later replaced by the Steering Committee and the Environmental Studies Committee.

This series contains documents relating to the operation of the Schoharie Land Trust, including correspondence, membership records, by-laws, policies, publications, committee reports, and meeting minutes. The meeting minutes begin in 1990 with the Steering Committee which became the Board of Directors with full incorporation in 1991. The records primarily begin in 1990 with the beginning of planning for the SLT, with a few articles and publications included from the 1980's.

This series consists of McLaren's administrative papers. It is predominantly composed of memorandums and correspondences documenting his involvement with a large number of different committees throughout his tenure at the University Albany. Most notable in size are the applications for the Husted Award, an annual award granted to the most outstanding undergraduate senior in science, which he was involved with from 1977 until his retirement in 1989. This series also contains his general papers, some teaching materials, and several booklets on the history of the University at Albany's Uptown Campus.

This series contains letters that Lowe received and, in many instances, carbon copies of letters that he wrote. Much of the correspondence is from other members of the faculty of the New School for Social Research and from other academic economists, but the series also includes many letters written by Lowe's daughters and grandchildren.
The second series of this collection consists of Fausold's research and subject files. A majority of this series are research materials for the Oral History of SUNY Project. These materials include a large number of dissertations, newspaper articles, and multiple finding aides to archival collections, some annotated by Fausold. There are also multiple copies of Fausold's Draft History of the State University of New York as well as executive committee meeting minutes and membership lists. Fausold's applications and acceptance letters into the Research Foundation and Visiting Professorships' GRI Program can be found in this series. Fausold also kept records of Research Foundation expenses, correspondence, and funding possibilities. This series also contains Fausold's correspondence from the 1980s to the 2000s about the Oral History of SUNY Project.
